I worked with Dale about fifteen years ago in putting together the reformed precalculus program at the University of Michigan. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and wish to share my condolences with his friends and family.

Dale was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and colleague.

He was also a fun guy: one of my favorite stories is when he and a couple of other newcomers set out to explore Qatar. I always warned people that if they took a wrong turn, they could end up in Saudi Arabia; he literally did. They got out of Qatar, but not into Saudi, and when they returned the Qataris wouldn't let them in without a Saudi exit stamp in their passport.

Dale told the story, laughed, and went on enjoying Qatar and enjoying life.

We all have such good memories of his time with us - Peace.

I'd drop by Dale's office at the end of many a long day. He'd shut down his computer and, with that smile, gently close the door and begin to sympathize with me. I came away amazed at his profound insights and always charmed by his blazing wit.

Dale was an inspiration to anyone who has ever stood in front of a class.

One of my greatest professors and one of the most inspirational people I've ever met. Thank you for your effort and hard work, you were the ideal form of a human being and a remarkable intellect that generously and unselfishly gave his best to make us the best. May your soul rest in peace, you will be greatly missed and not forgotten.

My wife & I are glad to say that we were friends with Dale. We enjoyed restaurants in Doha with him including Turkey Central, and especially one drive out into the desert in which we nearly got very lost, and almost accidentally got in trouble at the Qatar/Saudi border. We photographed Dale as he happily rode his first camel -- much to the amusement of everyone on the beach that day. Dale was an honest, fun & funny, good-natured, no-nonsense guy, a progressive thinker, and someone who gave us hope for the future. We are terribly saddened at his premature loss.
